Small Life, Slow Life: Homemade Edible Gifts, Quotes for Tough Times, Still Reading Wedding Blogs + Gray & Teal. {Link Love!}

Word.

Word.

Happy Friday!

My husband got up for work this morning (he gets up like, super early everyday) and normally I barely budge, but I wasn’t able to go back to bed and so here I am!

How have you been? Honestly, this has been a growth season for me, and by “growth” I mean d-i-f-f-i-c-u-l-t. It has been one of those times where it just seems like one rough thing is crashing on the shore after another and I’m barely catching my breath.

I’ve lost my cool and had to apologize, I’ve put myself right in the middle of big misunderstandings and I’ve also had to flex my compassion and patience muscles. (And I don’t know about you, but my compassion and patience muscles could REALLY use some beefing up.)

I hate pain. I mean, I don’t think anyone really digs it, but I really don’t like it. That said, when I experience a series of falling dominoes like this, I usually dig deep + trust that I’m learning a lot, and that those lessons will make me better. Big pain is usually actually just a big arrow, pointing to the fact that joy is around the corner. And totally by coincidence, I found this cool Thought Catalog post on Twitter this morning: 30 Quotes to Help Get You Through Tough Times. Here are some good ones:

“Since I was young, I have always known this: Life damages us, every one. We can’t escape that damage. But now, I am also learning this: We can be mended. We mend each other.” – Veronica Roth

“The most important thing I realized lately is that painful breakups, unrequited love, shitty jobs, and the like, help us to build character. And that no matter how bad it feels, we are much better off because of it.” – Unknown

“When I loved myself enough, I began leaving whatever wasn’t healthy. This meant people, jobs, my own beliefs and habits – anything that kept me small. My judgment called it disloyal. Now I see it as self-loving.” – Kim McMillen

Good stuff!

So because I’ve been a little bit bummed out lately, I thought I’d bring you a happy weekend post with recipes, DIYs and other feel-good stuff. You’re welcome!

I am naturally already (in October? really?) thinking about Christmas and how to be smart with money this year, so C and I have discussed making our gifts instead of buying them. My best friend + her husband do that and I look forward to their gifts every.single.year. Also, we have all of this amazing new kitchen stuff that we got as wedding gifts! (Seriously, wedding gifts are the best things ever.) That said, we also have large amounts of store credit at Williams-Sonoma and Crate & Barrel left over and I had to make C talk me out of buying a $300 canning machine. Yes, you read that right.

We’re really considering making this homemade Nutella for everyone this year. Delicious and you don’t have to put crappy cheap oils in it. Although I heard a rumor that there’s a global shortage of hazelnuts because of Nutella. (Does anyone know if that’s true?)

Look at all that gooey goodness.

We’re definitely making these this year: homemade caramels. (Note: A Beautiful Mess ALSO posted a caramel recipe yesterday. I feel like I’m manifesting caramel goodness.) It took me a while to find a recipe with no corn syrup (thank you Pinterest). Oddly enough, just a few weeks ago we got rid of my unopened candy thermometer that I’ve had for years. Humble pie made me order yet another one from Williams-Sonoma last night. But seriously, how cute would these be wrapped up in parchment paper and delivered in little cellophane bags? Done.

. Just stop. Can you imagine showing up for the holidays with these? Instant popularity.

I am such a sucker for cheesecake. I’d have to modify this to make it GF, but hello…I die? Double chocolate peanut butter cheesecake!

I don’t really want to give these away, I just want to eat them: Healthy sea salt + vinegar chips!

Also, sweet & savory roasted cashews.

Finally, no one does it like Ina Garten and I LOVE rosemary: rosemary roasted cashews. My stomach is actually growling now.

Do you ever make your holiday gifts, and are edible gifts appropriate? I think that so much time and love goes into them, and I LOVE getting gifts that people make themselves!

Okay, enough food-talk for this early in the morning.

Confession: I still read wedding blogs. It’s less frequently now than right after our wedding, but I still read them and totally love them, especially A Practical Wedding! Fav fav fav. I also still regularly add to my wedding Pinterest board….eeeeeven though I’m already married. Maybe for vow renewal? Haha. Anyway, back to APW –here’s the post on the girl who crocheted her own wedding dress that everyone freaked out over.

In other news, I actually bought throw pillows yesterday. This is a pretty big deal for me. Why? Well firstly, I hate our couch. It’s actually my couch from when I lived alone and it was also my bed for a year, because it’s an IKEA fold-out. It has a gray cover and it looks lumpy if you sit on it a lot, but we’re not in the market to buy a new couch for a while. Because they’re expensive. And because this is small life, slow life, and the couch we have works just fine. #keepingitreal

Also, I haven’t bought throw pillows because 1. they’re expensive, and 2. I can make them. That said, I found the most lovely, inexpensive, super soft gray + teal throw pillows at Tuesday Morning (are those only in California?) yesterday and I bit the bullet.

You may remember my gray + pink post from years back. Well, now I’m a convert and it’s all about gray + teal. Also, I now spell “gray” with an “a” because well, it looks better.

Okay kids, that’s enough for me. Go out and have a good weekend. And when all else fails, remember:
